I saw the granny square blanket on Attic24's blog and decided immediately that that would be my next project. I popped to my local haberdashery and hastily bought 4 balls of wool! I started it that day. I got so excited that I even started this blog and I made this post about it.
The tutorial on Attic24's blog is brilliant, especially for a newbie like myself. My squares were wonderful and I spent every possible minute creating them.
Then, I got impatient - I started stitching them together before I had finished making the full amount. Then I got bored and decided on a 6 x 8 squared centre, which isn't very big at all.
Once the minimal amount of squares were complete I started the rounds of the border, this is where it all went wrong. Rather than follow a pattern (which is the best thing to do for a person with barely any crochet skills), I decided to just stitch a trc into every stitch, including the 1ch bits inbetween the 3trc's. By the time the second row was finished it was obvious to see that it had gone all wobbly. Did I stop and undo it all to correct my error, oh no! I decided that with more weight to it, it might un-wobble itself. It didn't!
I made the border rounds slightly different as I had decided to mix up the stitching a bit once I had seen this sisterhood blanket - the most beautiful blanket I have ever seen in the world! I liked the irregularity of it all. The border finished once my wool had ran out. I was half way through doing this edging from Attic24 when I ran out of pink wool so it is a tiny edging but it still looks pretty.
I have definitely learnt from this blanket, I will always follow a pattern, if I don't follow a pattern I will be courageous enough to undo it all back to where I went wrong. It is a waste to ruin something special that took a lot of time, love and care to do just because of impatience. I could have resolved this but it would have involved buying more wool. I have decided to plan carefully for my next one and it will be a smasher!!
So here it is........the wobbly, small, blanket!
I like it! It has character & value!! :)

I think it's fantastic and you shouldn't be so hard on yourself!! I can't pick out any mistakes it looks great!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great, and the wobbles will smooth themselves out in time, don't be so hard on yourself x
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely! I can't wait to finish my first blanket...it grows, day-by-day, but seems to never near completion! x
ReplyDeleteHave you pinned it to the carpet and sprayed it with water yet? Trust me!! I got this tip from Attic24 too! Lay it out flat on the carpet/towel and pin it all the way round so its a bit taut and spray with water, let dry and it makes it as flat as a pancake! No more wobbly bits :) I think its called 'blocking' see this post from Attic24 -http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/2011/03/japanese-flower-scarf-ta-dah.html Hope this helps :)
