Betty Makes

So, it's been over two months since Betty Makes started up and I suppose I am doing quite well considering the time I have been open. I had visions of people flooding in to see me but of course the reality is that it is going to take some time for it to take off. Once that sun came out properly, the bookings cooled off so lets see what autumn brings! I am terribly impatient so this is a massive learning curve for me!

I have had plenty of interest and have already met some lovely people on my workshops and I have had fun teaching - it doesn't feel like a job, it's just like something I would want to do on my day off from working! I strongly believe that everybody should be happy working, as lets face it, we'll be doing it for years!!

I had a really positive experience this weekend on the needle felting workshop taught by Jenny as one of the students was a teenager and she loved it! She made a gorgeous elephant and couldn't wait to start making another animal! I love working with teenagers, I was a school counsellor until recently and am now working in my private practice counselling adolescents and adults. My main passion in life is to make a difference in young peoples lives so inspiring them is just one element of that!

The next move for Betty Makes is to run workshops during the half-term for young people, there's not a lot to do in Newmarket for teenagers so hopefully the workshops will be a positive thing in my town! I am thinking of having workshops for the smaller children (8 upwards) in the mornings as that is when they are more awake - then once the older kids (13 upwards) have woken up a bit, they can come in for a bit of afternoon crafting! I can get the schools to advertise for me, hence why I have to wait until October. I do wish I had set this up in the summer holidays before the schools closed!

I have all my fingers and toes crossed that this will be successful - wish me luck! Until then - have a little scroll through my workshops so far!

  2. It looks like you've had a few productive people in. I'm sure it'll pick up again in the Autumn. People are usually busy in the Summer holidays and it feels really self indulgent (as a parent) to book onto a course when the children are at home.
My friend who runs sewing workshops decided to do birthday parties for older children/teenagers. I think it's a really good idea - I'm always looking for something interesting to do for birthdays.

    1. Yes, they have all been wonderful! I picked the wrong month to start pushing a business like this! I do offer parties but I do need to have a party to take photos and promote it. Thank you for your comment, been very helpful X
